Why does a roof vent clog faster than a side wall vent?

Gravity works against you. Lint that fails to exit falls back down the vertical run. It settles at the first elbow above the ceiling plate. Interior hallway laundry closets here do exactly that: up through the plate, into the attic, out a roof jack. Fifteen to thirty-five feet with two to four elbows is normal. Every elbow is a catch point.

The cleaning runs from both ends. Rotary brush from the dryer connection upward, then the jack gets cleared from above. The flapper is the part people never see. Lint props it open, and then wasps or mud daubers build inside the hood. Nest mud does not brush out like lint does. It has to be dug and rinsed.

Attic duct material decides whether the clean holds. White vinyl or foil flex is still in service in plenty of these homes where rigid metal is called for. It sags between trusses and collects damp lint. Sheet metal screws driven through seams snag fiber and start a dam.
